The Railway Ministry shared a video on social media on March 13. This 2 minute 12 second video is about the world's tallest railway arch bridge being built over the Chenab River. Work on the bridge is in its final stages. Upon completion, the bridge will be 35 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The 1315 meter long bridge has cost Rs 1250 crore. This bridge is seen as an engineering feat.

Both parts of the arch of the bridge are connected. It is said that even the temperature of minus 20 degree Celsius will not affect this bridge. The bridge can also withstand strong winds of more than 250 km per hour. It is hoped that trains will start plying from this bridge by December 2022.

There are many bridges in India that are unique examples of Indian engineering in itself. Let us know about some such bridges ...

Bogiebill Bridge Assam is

the longest railway and road bridge in the country. It has been made double decker. The road is built on 3 lanes above it and there are railway tracks on the lower 2 lanes. The length of the bridge over the Brahmaputra river at Bogibil near Dibrugarh in Assam is about 4.94 km.

Built at a cost of about Rs 5,900 crore, the bridge is considered to be very important in terms of safety. The Indian Army can easily reach the border areas of Arunachal Pradesh through this bridge. The road to the bridge is so strong that even heavy military tanks can easily pass over it.

After the construction of this bridge, the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh was reduced by four hours. The foundation stone of the project was laid by the then Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda on January 22, 1997. It was opened to the public on December 25, 2018.

Bandra-Worli Sea Link

This is the first 8 lane bridge in India as well as the longest sea bridge. The 5.6 km long bridge connects Bandra with Worli. The bridge, which used to take 45 minutes to travel between Bandra and Worli, can now be completed in 6 minutes.

Construction of the bridge began in 1999. It was initially estimated to cost Rs 660 crore, but the bridge was completed at a cost of over Rs 1,600 crore. It opened to the public in 2009. It is estimated that the bridge uses steel wire equal to the circumference of the earth.

Signature Bridge Delhi

it is shaped like a bow. Almost twice as high as the Qutub Minar, the bridge connects Wazirabad to the Outer Ring Road. Like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the top of the bridge overlooks Delhi.

People are taken to the top of the bridge by 4 elevators from where they can see the city of Delhi. The 675 meter long and 154 meter high bridge has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1518 crore. In 2004, the then Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit announced the construction of the bridge and it was completed in November 2018.

Atal Setu

The Atal Setu on the Ravi River is a cable bridge connecting Punjab to Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal. The 592 meter long and 13.50 meter wide bridge cost Rs 200 crore. The bridge was inaugurated by the then Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar on December 24, 2015. After the construction of the bridge, the travel time between Basholi in Jammu and Kashmir and Dunera in Punjab has been reduced a lot. Where it used to take 4-5 hours to cover this distance, now it only takes half an hour.
